Whenever I learn that there is a new Kilian perfume released, I get excited and can’t wait to experience it!. Kilian Hennessy, heir to the Hennessy cognac fortune and grandson of the founder of LVMH is passionate about his art, and has a commitment to supporting perfume artisans and creating perfumes the way they were meant to be – using the finest ingredients possible, and not cutting corners in order to fit into a marketer’s plan. Rare ingredients, artistry and exquisite packaging are what make a luxury perfume, and Kilian makes no apologies or compromises on any for the sake of a sale. He’s dedicated to keeping the art of true perfume alive and I adore that.
From his new Arabian Nights collection, Rose Oud, perfumer Calice Becker, uses Oud, the precious oil from Agarwood, and mixes it with the Turkish rose to create an accord that is rich and opulent, yet also familiar. This is actually a fairly straightforward fragrance, with the addition of very little else, perhaps some raspberry (?) and others I honestly can’t identify, but the quality and proportions of the ingredients make it very special, long lasting, and is delightful to wear.

The lovely bottle immediately grabbed my attention. With its lilac liquid and bold Japanese style calligraphy, it’s in perfect harmony with the designer it celebrates. Hanae Mori was not only the first Japanese woman to show her collections in both Paris and New York, she was the first Asian woman to be admitted as an official haute couture designer by the French couture federation. Today, in her 80’s and still involved in creating fragrance, she deserves all the accolades she gets from her admirers.
Hanae Mori No.1, her latest fragrance is a floral that’s midway between an Eau de Toilette and an Eau de Parfum. The feminine fragrance opens with bergamot, blackcurrant, grapefruit and mulberry leaf. Its heart is of blackberry, jasmine, raspberry and white musk. Lasting final notes are sandalwood, amber and vanilla. It’s a limited edition of 7,000, and one of the first in the fragrance industry to use sun and wind energy for its creation. Approximately 30% of the power needed to create No.1 was from renewable sources. Additionally, up to 5% of the proceeds will go to the Clean Air/Cool Planet organization.

Just because I might be doing something active like enjoying a bike ride or taking an exercise class, it doesn’t mean I skip wearing fragrance. I wear it daily and adore my fragrance wardrobe. While you may not be as obsessive as I am, you still shouldn’t be wearing a sultry, sexy, Saturday night romance scent on your Sunday afternoon walk around town. I found a couple that fit the bill for casual weekend afternoons. Burberry Sport for Women has notes of mandarin and ginger along with magnolia and honeysuckle and finally musk and cedar wood. Swiss Army for Women, created by perfumer Harry Fremont, is fresh and spirited with its blend of fizzy ginger, lily of the valley, peony and soft white musk. Let both of these add a little spring in your step!

As the weather turns warmer and the days get longer, we New Yorkers start thinking of the Hamptons, all of them, East, South and West. Hampton Sun’s Privet Bloom always brings on the sunshine! This signature fragrance is a lovely blend of lily of the valley, white hyacinth, dune grass, blue plum, sea spray and of course, the privet bloom. Wear it and it’ll hurry summer along!
