CRABTREE & EVELYN IRIS honors and celebrates an exquisite perfumery ingredient cherished since Renaissance times. In particular, Iris pays homage to the enchanting, enticing iris rhizome known as the orris root. It’s at the heart of this sumptuous, sensual, modern floriental. Deliciously and richly playful, Iris has depth and intrigue; a plush cloak of velvet that you just know, on some level, resonates magic. Violet and jasmine accords wrap the scent in certain soft mystery; top notes of Italian bergamot and cassis lend a charming, fresh appeal to the inviting base notes of exotic sandalwood, patchouli, fresh vetiver, cedarwood, and creamy musk. Is it normal to want to sink your teeth into iris? Now it is! I’ve just discovered this recently, and can’t wait to wear it on autumn nights. This intoxicating new fragrance was recently nominated for a prestigious FiFi Award from the Fragrance Foundation! Available at Crabtree & Evelyn stores and http://www.crabtree-evelyn.com
When Donna Karan says she wants to bottle “the energy of New York City,” we’re glad her reference point is a sunny, optimistic New York, where even the hot summer days are still somehow perfectly chilled – and chill. New DKNY Women Energizing Eau de Toilette takes the essence of the original, beloved scent introduced in 1999, and gives it a light, fresh twist. Top notes of refreshing citrus mix and mingle with chilled top-shelf vodka and tomato leaves; the heart is wet and maybe just a teensy bit wild, with water lilies, green coral orchids, and yellow daffodils; the finish is a sexy, close-to-you affair of white birch and tulip tree wool. Will wearing it make you as desirable and exciting as Anja and Sasha, in the latest DKNY campaign? Grab an intoxicating bottle, spritz away, and see for yourself…just look both ways while crossing traffic; it’s still a jungle out there. Available at Sephora stores and http://www.sephora.com
From legendary jewelry to beautiful fragrances, the name Bulgari always means modern elegance and refinement. Following up on the success of Jasmin Noir, noted perfumers Olivier Polge and Sophie Labbe have created Mon Jasmin Noir. The perfumers set about to create a floral and feminine fragrance celebrating the seductive nature of women who are young and vivacious in spirit using actress Kirsten Dunst as their campaign model Opening notes of golden cedrat soon lead to fresh muguet along with flirty sambac jasmine absolute, angel winged jasmine. Not resting on its florals, the notes move on to precious woods of cedar and patchouli which are then joined by the creamiest musky nougatine. Labbe, says, “Bringing the softness of its tasty addictiveness together with the vibration of modern white woods was the perfect touch of caressing sensuality at the very heart of the fragrance.” Available at fine department stores and http://www.sephora.com.
I warmed to Elizabeth Arden Green Tea Lavender practically before I made its acquaintance; how could I not, when it contained a paring of two of my most favorite things? Perfumer Rodrigo Flores-Roux of Givaudan sought to create a fragrance with a “magical” feeling; what transpired is a joyful scent that simultaneously relaxes and renews. Comforting, uplifting, and positively optimistic, this is the soft, sun-bleached sheet that travels with you to your favorite grassy knoll. Adult security blanket in a spray? Maybe that’s why it offers that happy-comfy feeling! Of course, feel-good top notes like Meyer Lemon and Spearmint, and a base with accords like soft skin musks never hurt, either. Elizabeth Arden Green Tea Camellia was inspired by the ancient art of Japanese flower arrangement called Ikebana. The sasanqua, a very specific and fragrant camellia, is often at the center of the arrangement. Its lovely fragrance fuses peony, rose, and mandarin tree blossom notes with a tea nuance; you will discover it in the middle notes of Green Tea Camellia, along with Chinese Magnolia and Green Tea Leaves, after a brighter, crisper opening of Sheer Bergamot, crisp Yuzu and Ume Plum. Available at Elizabeth Arden counters and online at http://www.ElizabethArden.com.
This year’s interpretation of Burberry Summer Limited Edition Fragrance is said to “capture the tranquil mood of a British summer morning.” I’m not sure exactly how tranquil a British summer morning is, say, in London; what I do know is that any o’clock in the a.m. is the right time right here, if I’ve got sunshine on my shoulder, a fluffy, clean robe on my freshly-washed body, and a sugared grapefruit on my squeaky, sparkling plate. Burberry Summer Limited Edition evokes this pleasurable, vacation morning feeling with ease, leaving you craving more of the juice when just a tender veil of clean softness later lingers behind. Why not take it with you, and renew your happy day at will!? Breezy and light, there’s no fear of overdosing on this one! Burberry Summer Limited Edition Fragrance is available at Burberry counters and online at http://www.sephora.com.
Mark Constantine’s latest fun-with-fragrance is a Gorilla Perfume at Lush concept that’s refreshingly carefree, and doesn’t take itself too seriously. Dirty is a new range which I’ll call “unisex-friendly;” it’s comprised of items such as Dirty Spring Wash Shower Gel (pleasantly tingly), Dirty Hair Styling Cream (see review in Hair Care section), and Dirty Body Spray (a fresh that lasts even when one is much less than fresh). Separately, the items all smell delightful, each one different from the next; together, their fragrance makes up the sum of the body spray: clean and herbal, bursting forth with a cool breath of mint. Dirty, however, is anything but dirty: Tarragon, thyme, and lavender all come out to play, as do woodsy oakmoss and sandalwood, It’s all packed up in an adorably functional spray that recalls backyard fun and garden mists. Toss Dirty Body Spray into your gym or beach bag, for an insta-shower at the ready; layer all the items for even more good clean fun. The Dirty range is available at Lush stores and online at http://www.lushusa.com.
