Open the closet of any NYC woman and grab your flashlight. It’s like peering into a black hole; a sea of black skirts, tops, shoes, bags and pants. And of course, at least one perfect LITTLE BLACK DRESS.
Everyone has her favorite LBD. You know the one, you slip it on and in an instant you feel chic, sophisticated and seductive. With the right accessories, you can stand out in a crowd, and on the rare occasion that you want to blend in, your best LBD is the perfect classic foil. We sniffed and sprayed over fifty scents to find our favorites. No matter which one you wear, you’ll always be stylishly scented. Juxtaposing fashion with fragrance we paired some of Fall ’07s best little black dresses with perfumes that, like their fabric counterparts, will always fit.

The Red Carpet Ready LBD: Badgley Mischka Parfum exudes “Glamour with a Capital G”. The talented team of Mark Badgley and James Mischka dress Hollywood’s A list (including Sharon Stone, Catherine Zeta Jones, Madonna, and Eva Longoria). The beauty of their evening wear is that it “fits” sophisticated women of all ages; one zip and you look fabulous. Their eponymous fragrance, housed in a multi faceted crystal bottle, beguiles with notes of wild berries, peach, creme de cassis, osmanthus, peony, jasmine, caramel, sandalwood, amber, patchouli and sueded musks. One spritz and you may be surrounded by paparazzi. Available at http://www.saksfifthavenue.com

The Romantic LBD: Chasse aux Papillons by L’Artisan Parfumeur – Floating and ethereal citrus notes and linden set the stage for this dreamy floral, while orange blossom and tuberose, shimmer through the weightless overlay of the other floral notes. If there is a fragrance that captures the essence of romance… tender yet fleeting, La Chasse Aux Papillons is it. Available at http://www.neimanmarcus.com

The Timeless LBD: Fleurissimo by Creed – The venerable House of Creed is headed by sixth-generation master perfumer Olivier Creed. It was Olivier’s (deceased) father, James Henry Creed who originally created Fleurissimo for Princess Grace of Monaco for her wedding day. Iconic women such as Jackie O and Madonna favor this fragrance. Fleurissimo is beautifully constructed, and surprisingly uncomplicated. Notes in this non white floral are: tuberose, Bulgarian rose, violet, and Florentine iris. The florals are a rich and sophisticated blend; neither overbearing nor ordinary. This fragrance does not need flash – it accomplishes its stature as one of the ‘most royal” scents ever, through quality ingredients and timeless artistry. Available at http://www.neimanmarcus.com

The Seductive LBD: Bois de Paradis by Parfums Delrae – One of the most sensually intriguing fragrances we tested. Bois de Paradis is a warm blend of woods, blackberry, fig, rose, amber, and spices. My fragrance wardrobe just made room for MY ultimate LBD. When I wear Bois de Paradis, I feel irresistible. Next, that dress! Available at Barney’s NY and http://www.lusciouscargo.com
Fall 2007 Marc by Marc Jacobs (courtesy of style.com)
The LBD for Pretty Young Things: Daisy by Marc Jacobs. Marc knows what girls want, especially the bevy of PYT who clamor for his trend making frocks and handbags. Unlike Marc by Marc Jacobs, his signature scent, no heavy floral notes here. Daisy is a fresh blend of wild strawberry, violet leaves, red grapefruit, gardenia, violet, jasmine, musk, vanilla and white woods. The bottle is delightful and as collectible as the Stam bag. Available at Bloomingdale’s.

The Uber Hip LBD: Bolt of Lightening by JAR.They are a rare breed of women. These are ” the Alphas” of what’s new, what’s hot, who’s not and what isn’t even on the market. They frequent the clubs, restaurants and bars that have no name and have unlisted phone numbers. The LBD of the Uber-Hip is from the perfume house of Paris jeweler Joel Arthur Rosenthal and is called Bolt of Lightening. Pssst…There is a JAR boutique in Bergdorf Goodman in New York City. Trying the fragrances there is a bit daunting: the staff will not discuss the fragrance notes and in fact prefer that you smell the scents without knowing even so much as their names. The “olfactory pyramids” (top, mid and base notes) are kept under wraps. Bolt of Lightening is one of the seven scents in JAR’s line of “experiences”. BOL is intriguing, but I felt like I was playing a game of “I spy”; I smell wet laundry, ozone, a thunder storm, white stuff, benzoin. Hell if I know. I am going to find one of those always in the know types and spray her with Jovan Musk until she tells all…Available at Bergdorf Goodman.

The Flirty LBD: Coco Mademoiselle by Chanel. If the grand dame of fragrances, Chanel N5 evokes an image of a chic woman, who lunches wearing iconic tweed suits; than Coco Mademoiselle is her sweeter and more playful daughter. Coco Mlle. is fruity, inviting, and enjoyable; a citrus blend warmed by patchouli, a rose/jasmine mixture and that unique Chanel base of “Je ne sais quoi”. It is a LBD that is both modern and delightful. Available at http://www.chanel.com

The Elegant LBD: Estee Lauder Private Collection Tuberose Gardenia originally created for and worn by Aerin Lauder, this scent is now available to the rest of us. A brilliant tribute to her grandmother Estee’s legacy, the fragrance is smooth, subtle and elegant. What makes this fragrance an LBD is that the potentially heady floral notes of gardenia and tuberose are tempered by neroli, lilac, carnation and a hint of vanilla bourbon for ultimate sophistication. And that bottle! Available at http://www.neimanmarcus.com and Bergdorf Goodman
EDITOR’S NOTE: Spritz on your LBD fragrance and slip on your Spanx; we aren’t fans of the “Little Black Dress Diet” that just hit bookstores. BN Girls know that if they want to lose those last five…exercise and eat right! Drinking parsley tea, measuring oats and doling out a handful of fruits doesn’t sound like a healthy way to lose weight. It’s about Fashion not FAD DIETS!
