Handmade in Harlem

Hamlin Apothecary is a beauty brand founded on legacy and purpose. Founder Terri Freeman worked for years in the fashion industry both as a designer and stylist. She’s always been a proponent of natural foods and beauty products, and always found herself scouring local farmers markets and stores for the most natural, healthiest goods. When she noticed that many things contained hidden toxins, she began researching raw ingredients that she could use to create her own products. After many rounds of experimentation and testing, Hamlin Apothecary’s body butter was born. A combination of food-grade or better ingredients that are infused with healing botanicals, the body butter is an all natural whipped body butter handmade in Harlem. It is a combination of healing butters and oils infused with homeopathic botanicals. It is great for use on the entire body, hair and nails.

Freeman says, “We source all of our ingredients with care, as we’ve always believed that what we put on our bodies is just as important as what we put in our bodies. Our products are created in micro-batches to ensure quality and concentration of botanical infusion as well as aromatherapeutic properties.” Following the ethos that what we put on our bodies is easily absorbed, Hamlin Apothecary’s products are easily absorbed into the skin and hair for maximum hydration and healing.

Scent is also another component to the all-natural offerings. Some of the most popular scents are the energizing Citrus and Tropical Citrus scents as well as the more relaxing Lavender and Jasmine scents. All of the scents are based on aromatherapy, so they are scented either with 100% essential oils or all-natural scents. There’s also an unscented version for those that are scent adverse.

For Freeman, Hamlin Apothecary is a family affair. The brand is inspired by Hamlin Drugs, founded in Raleigh, N.C., by her Great, Great Grandfather, Captain J.E. Hamlin, in 1904. Captain Hamlin served his customers with a horse and buggy, waxed mustache and a smile. Freeman says, “We strive to offer all of my customers the level of service and quality of products that Hamlin Drugs offered its customers for over 100 years.”
