Welcome Summer — Best Products for Shaving and Saving Skin

Our skin changes not only as we age but also during the different seasons. Like a poor diet, too much alcohol and smoking, the elements too can wreak havoc on the epidermis.

Here are my picks to keep your beard trimmed and your skin in tip-top shape this season: The best products for shaving and saving skin this summer.

You know that I love my Kiehl’s. For this time of year, I’m a big fan of their Oil Eliminator — Deep Cleansing Exfoliating Face Wash and 24-Hour Anti-Shine Moisturizer. These products are oil-free, paraben-free and sulfate-free and help to eliminate sweat, sebum and air-born pollutants. I’ve discovered that these products help keep my skin clean, oil free and less shiny.

You want the sun and your personality to shine, not your face.

Mer & Mistral by L’Occitane is a must-have for the beach bag and your travel shave kit. Their shower gel and fresh body gel are the perfect size and scent after a day at the beach or any physical activity. The aquatic fragrance has slight aromatic notes. Zesty top notes of lemon and mandarin give way to a generous heart of cypress, pine and rosemary — it conjures up the Mediterranean coast. I also recommend their Mer & Mistral after-shave fluid.

Crabtree & Evelyn just re-launched their men’s collection with new names; their Sandalwood is now Indian Sandalwood and Nomad is titled Moroccan Myrrh. These fragrances have been long-standing favorites for many years. True to their names, these soaps and shower gels possess robust scents. They are infused with agents that clean and help condition the skin. I’m also a fan of their FIFI Award Winner, West Indian Lime Collection. I think they are perfect for the bath especially if you are receiving weekend guests.

I recently tested the Schick Hydro 5. I switch between wet blade shaving and dry electric shavers. I was pleased with the close shave this razor performs with its 5-blade system and a Hydrating Gel Reservoir, with aloe and vitamin E. I noticed that it lasts longer than other lubricating strips and continues to add lubrication to the skin with every stroke, hydrating the skin throughout each shave. I was able to use it for over 10 days without changing the razor head. I give this razor two thumbs up and one smooth face.

J. Paul Products

J. Paul shaving and skincare products recently partnered with Nordstrom’s Department stores so I decided to check out some of their items. The collection uses ingredients like jojoba, aloe vera, vitamin E and fine oils to alleviate problems associated with irritation and dryness, nicks and cuts and chapped skin. In particular, I like their Glide shave cream. The scent is light, it made shaving easier and my face felt clean and moisturized. I recommend that all metro men give this collection a try.

For guys who like a wet/dry electric shaver, I chose the Panasonic Arc 3. We’ve all used all kinds of shaving devices over the years so lets just keep it simple and to the facts.

The shaver features:
• 3-blade cutting system for a smooth shave.
• Pop-up trimmer for grooming mustache and sideburns.
• Wet/Dry operation offers the option of shaving in the shower with shaving cream or gel or dry shaving outside of the bath.

Several years ago, The Gap launched a hand lotion called Grass. My co-worker used it every day and it filled the office with the scent of a freshly mowed lawn. I loved it and it reminded me of summer. Unfortunately that product is discontinued but I found the next best thing. Lemongrass Body Lotion by Mt. Sapola. It’s a superb moisturizer and the scent is light, fresh and smells exactly like lemon and grass.

I did not include sunscreen in this coverage because that should be a given. Always apply the highest SPF to all exposed skin when heading outdoors. Enjoy your summer.
