BN: What inspired you to start your own business? How did it all begin?
RP: I wanted to do something that made a difference to people and that allowed me to support my family but also have the flexibility to be the mom I wanted to be. I felt as though I needed to be my own boss to make all of that happen. It all began because I found myself wanting to be the best mom I could be but didn’t feel either confident or that I had access to the types of information and products I wanted. So I decided that I wanted to provide this much needed education and great quality products throughout pregnancy and beyond – it’s such an important time. While this was the grand plan I couldn’t do this overnight so I started where I could and where I thought made the most sense: at the beginning of motherhood – in pregnancy – in maternity fashion.
BN: What challenges did you face when starting your business? What is the best piece of advice you’ve gotten as a business woman?
RP: I was learning as I went – I didn’t go to business school. I think some of the greatest challenges I have faced have been around hiring team members. They can help make or break your company and it can sometimes be difficult to find great people.
Someone once told me it takes “intestinal fortitude” to be successful in business and they were so right. Reminding myself of this got me through some of the tough moments – things simply don’t happen over night even when they appear that way from the outside.
BN: What are some of your favorite activities to do with your kids (in or around NYC)?
RP: Central Park! We can discover one playground after the other for hours. I also love the Bronx Zoo.
BN: You’re on a desert island…with your kids – name 5 must-have items you’ll want with you.
– Lunar Bars
– Aden and Anais swaddle cloths
– The tales of Brambly Hedge
BN: What are your goals/plans for the future of your company (realistic or in your wildest dreams)?
RP: I am launching “conversations with Rosie Pope” – a funny, educational, relevant video series on youtube and Amazon instant video as well as continuing to grow my baby line (Rosie Pope Baby) and launching nursing in 2015.
Thanks for chatting with us, Rosie! We look forward to seeing what’s in store for you and your many mompreneurial endeavors!
