How much do I love my pet? She sleeps in my bed at night, although she has four (yes four!) dog beds scattered around my home. She has more shampoos, conditioners and sprays than I do. And I leave the TV on for her, if she is at home alone for a couple of hours. Her favorite is the Golf channel, I think the soothing voice of the sports commentators makes her nap!
However, when I heard about the Life Jewel Heart Pendant, I realized that I am perhaps not as devoted to my dog as I thought. Why? Although wearing their pet’s DNA might be a fashion accessory some people might choose, it just wasn’t for me.
Offered by Perpetua (www.perpetus.us) the company purifies your dog’s or cat’s DNA into a fine, silky web. The strand is preserved in a faceted crystal heart, with setting choices of gold-plated or sterling silver or an elegant 14kt gold bail. The DNA helix can be tinted in a choice of colors, like Rose Gold, Amethyst or Turquoise.
If you’d like something simpler, there is the Original Life Jewel Pendant. The DNA is preserved forever in resin, crowned with a sterling silver cap, topped with a heart-shaped charm.
The company states that any DNA can be made into this unique keepsake, not just dogs and cats. Horse, bird, reptile, even human DNA can be molded into a pendant. Obtaining the sample can be a little tricky, they recommend that blood shows the best results but a cheek swab will also work. Instructions are available on their site when ordering. There’s even a video on DNA, for the scientifically inclined!
As for me, I’ll stick to my very mundane pewter keychain of my Irish Setter. I don’t need my dog’s DNA to wear, she’s already in my every facet of life.
