Care for the Cure

One in eight women will develop invasive breast cancer at some point in her life. And that’s the second leading cause of cancer death in women. In 2006, over 200,000 new cases of breast cancer will be detected in the United States.
We at Beauty News urge readers to join in the fight for a cure by contributing to the cause in a beautiful way. Here are some pretty skincare picks that donate a portion of the proceeds to help find a cure for this devastating disease.

In Touch Breast Examination Glove by Bath & Bodyworks: A gem of an invention, this FDA approved self-examination tool is filled with a non-toxic liquid that reduces friction by 50%. When you use the glove over your breast, your fingertips have heightened sensitivity. This enables you to detect granular bumps and nip cancer in the bud. Retailing for only $9, the glove has been endorsed by the American Breast Cancer Foundation (ABCF). The glove comes with a full set of instructions and a handy monthly reminder calendar, but the best part of it is that it’s completely painless to use, and it’s reusable! $1 from the sale of each glove will go to ABCF. Our words of advice? Buy it! This supplement to getting routine mammograms could save your life. Available at all Bath & Bodyworks stores and on

Philosophy’s Unforgettable “Shower For the Cure” Bath, Shampoo and Shower Gel: This foamy multipurpose shower aid makes turning on the tap a pure pleasure. Retails for $20, with every cent of the net profits going to EIF Women’s Cancer Research Foundation.

LaLicious Sugar Souffle Scrub Sampler: Scrub for a cause with this delicious trio of Sugar Souffle samplers. Each 2 oz. tin contains a whipped mixture of coconut oil, cane sugar, sweet almond oil, vitamin E oil and honey. The scrubs make dry skin so passé that you’ll be left wondering what you ever did without it (avoid scrubbing the soles of your feet; the scrubs are so emollient that you might slip in the bathtub!). 20% of proceeds will benefit the Breast Cancer Research Fund. Not a surprise that celebs love this so much! Whish Shave Crave (by Dina Fierro): Lovely, luxurious and indulgently moisturizing, Whish’s Shave Crave aids in the perfect shave, leaving skin soft-no lotion required. In case you need an added incentive, the company is donating 10% of proceeds from the Pomegranate Shave Crave and the Swarovski Crystal Body Brushes to the Susan Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer Research during the month of October. Elemis “Time For Awareness” Kit: This $89 kit contains the limited edition Pro-Collagen Lifting Treatment (a 30ml fuchsia tube for the neck and bust) for Breast Cancer Awareness month. 10% of the retail priced will go to The Lavender Trust for Breast Cancer care.

Crabtree & Evelyn’s Skin Care “Remedy” & “Routine” lines: 10% of the proceeds from the sale of each product in these two lines will go to the American Cancer Society. The “Routine” skin care line contains cleaners, exfoliants and moisturizers that contain Swiss alpine flower extracts including those from edelweiss, hyssop, echinacea and artemisia. The “Remedy” line zones in on imperfections and imbalances, from dark circles to lip feathering.

Darphin Predermine Wrinkle Corrective Serum: Consider this the gold in your skincare treasure box. This concentrated serum is lightning quick to be absorbed into your skin and erases wrinkles like a magic wand. It costs a pretty penny ($195), but it’s cheaper than Botox! 10% of all Predermine proceeds will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation during October.

Therapy Systems Clinical Solutions’ “Amazingly Gentle Scrub”: This sweet smelling, super-light scrub contains delicate Jojoba beads that loosen and remove dead skin cells from your skin without over dying it. Of many exfoliants that I’ve tried, this is one of my favorites! A portion of the proceeds goes towards breast cancer awareness and research, so what could be sweeter? Retails for around $12.50.

Fresh Baked’s Strawberry Shortcake Moisturizing Shampoo & Body Wash: Created to commemorate the 21st anniversary of recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the baby pink colored wash leaves your skin and hair fresh, and mouth-wateringly sweet. Through the launch of the limited edition pink bottle, Zotos will raise $10,000 for the City of Hope foundation, which aims to prevent and cure cancer and other debilitating illnesses. The wash retails for $7.99. Visit for more information.
