Hello again and welcome to this session of Ms. Wizard in which I explain simply why serums work wonders. In a sentence: Serums have smaller molecules than thick moisturizers so they are quickly absorbed and penetrate deeply. Creamy humectants act more as a topical barrier to defend your face against the elements and help seal moisture in. Those are great in winter weather, as well as added protection for anyone with dry skin; and when they have an added spf they protect you from sun damage. Use a moisturizer over serum for daytime if you’re faced with extreme weather and/or a face that’s dry. Serums are not pumped up with extra fluid so they are highly concentrated, super effective and therefore cost-efficient to use—a little dab (5-ish drops,) really will do you. Serums are also great alone for nighttime use. Here are four I highly recommend.
Stem Cells Intensive Serum from Pevonia is specifically intended to do its heavy-lifting while you sleep. It contains argan stem cells, comfrey root stem cells, collagen, hyaluronic acid, and I can attest: it does work wonders for the more mature among us. It has a deeply seductive scent that helps you drift off and you awake to a velvety face. Use this very scientific serum to reverse and/or protect against the inevitable effects of aging.
MD Ultimate Stem Cell Factor 55 by Susan F. Lin M.D. is also for nighttime use. Three tiny, clear drops vanish immediately and instantly soothe and smooth. It is made up of 55% active stem cell factors and delivers results in a matter of days by jump-starting skin cell regeneration, restoring firmness and diminishing fine lines for real. Basically, it gets your own skin to do its best…and fast. It’s not a miracle, it’s science and it delivers on its promise to rejuvenate.
My Daily Dose from Skin Inc is a serum you custom blend yourself. I chose Hydrate ‘Em because my skin is usually thirsty. I received a glass dropper bottle and three vials: Coenzyme Q10 to renew, Ceramide to reinforce, and my go-to for quenching, Hylauronic Acid to replenish. The serums are composed of encapsulated alginates – from the stem walls of kelp – that are protected from environmental exposure and activate upon application. The alginates are not based on oil so there’s no greasy residue. Alginates help moisturize and hold large pools of water. If this is too much science for you, just know that it works well. Three drops and you’re good to go. In this age of selfies and bespoke, having your own custom blend only seems natural.
If you’re like me, a less is more type o’ girl, Nourishing Serum from Luminance Skincare is just what you need. There’s no embellished packaging and it does not contain toxins or synthetics. It simply contains raw, organic ingredients that work – like tamarind and tamanu seed extract, avocado and argan oil, along with orchid, comfrey, chamomile, sea buckhorn and calendula herbal extracts. Last but not least, it is affordably priced. I am now a convert.
