This past March my husband and I were preparing to celebrate our one year anniversary. It just so happened that we were way overdue for a vacation, too. Ever since coming home from our highly caloric 2-week Hawaiian honeymoon of indulgence and gluttony, we’ve been carrying with us what one might call the ‘married 15’ – you know, sort of like the ‘freshman 15’? When you’re blissfully happy and secure in a relationship (and there’s no wedding day diet incentive anymore), it’s easy to go overboard. So, while we wanted to relax and get pampered on this long-awaited vacation, we wanted to think healthy and maybe even start on the road back to our pre-wedding day selves. Canyon Ranch was the perfect destination (www.canyonranch.com).
There’s nothing like a true classic and Canyon Ranch is the pinnacle of all spa getaways. My husband and I took a quick and convenient nonstop flight on www.jetblue.com to Tucson, Arizona where we woke up to clear blue sunny skies and in the luxurious accommodations that are the signature of CR. At this all-inclusive retreat surrounded by desert cactus and gorgeous mountain ranges, stress is non-existent. Prior to your arrival, an activity consultant as well as a registered nurse will contact you to discuss the endless ways to spend your days there. Vacation packages also include spa allowances (so there’s no need to fret about anything financial during your stay), and there is no shortage of options when it comes to spa treatments.
I luxuriated in the Ayurvedic Herbal Rejuvination, which was not only relaxing but enlightening as well. A thorough analysis of my lifestyle revealed my ‘Dosha‘ and in turn, the various ways I can seek balance, peace and harmony in my life. I also couldn’t resist their highly recommended Mango Sugar Glo, which left my skin baby soft and refreshingly fragrant. Though my husband opted for more traditional treatments and relaxed with a few hot stone massages, he did get adventurous and tried Yamuna Body Rolling – a massage (and exercise) technique that elongates muscles and improves alignment. Their 84-page “Experience Canyon Ranch” booklet will give you detailed descriptions of all of their services from Clairvoyant Readings to cooking lessons to Water Meditation. CR has a professional on hand for just about any area you could think of related to health. Meet with a nutritionist or behavioral therapist to discuss your ‘relationships with food’, ‘overcome your fear of the water’, or ‘explore your personality’. Of course, there are more than a few personal trainers, sports instructors (tennis, golf, swimming etc.), medical doctors and hiking guides if you want to stick to the basics. You could sit by the pool all day – you just may not want to at a place like Canyon Ranch.
Living in a skyscraper town where everyone travels at what seems to be the speed of light, I thought Canyon Ranch was just the reminder I needed to relax and rejuvenate my mind and body. I’m also happy to report that the effects of living the CR lifestyle for only one week have stayed with me ever since getting back to New York two and a half months ago. At CR, our days were filled with brisk morning walks, yoga classes, afternoon swims, cooking demonstrations and delicious (and healthy) gourmet meals that could rival any of the finest restaurants in Manhattan. It was like going to an elite 5-star sleepaway camp for adults.
My husband did have a minor breakdown upon learning that there’s no soda or alcohol on the premises but the yummy (and limitless) food more than made up for that. Nutritional information is always provided on the menu for those of us keeping track and wanting to jumpstart a diet. CR is a great place for couples, parents and their teenagers, or a group of your best girlfriends who want luxury accommodations, Four Seasons-caliber service, and of course, the newest, most innovative approaches to healthy living and pampering – Abhyanga-Shirodhara anyone?
It was great to leave the snow and slush behind and bask in the Tucson sun, but if skiing or a Berkshire summer is more up your alley, plan a stay at the Lenox, Massachusetts property. Did I mention you could also get a little CR while in LV? Tell your man to stay as long as he wants in the casino – you’re off to the spa! But no matter which location you visit, staying at Canyon Ranch is the surest bet you’ll ever make.
