Spring is finally upon us and it’s time to get glowing! But achieving healthy, radiant skin is based on more than knowledge of the latest bronzers and highlighters. True luminosity comes from skin that’s been prepped and cared for, from the inside out and the outside in. For tips on how to get our faces looking fabulous for the season, we turned to Cornelia Zicu, global chief creative officer for Red Door Spas, and luxury skincare’s go-to gal.
If you can swing a trip to the spa, Zicu recommends kicking off your spring renewal with some microdermabrasion treatments. “It’s a simple way to slough off the dead skin cells, revealing more radiant ones underneath,” says Zicu. “When you remove dry winter skin, you clear a surface for products with active ingredients to penetrate.” Why pay more for effective products that pack a punch if your skin isn’t receptive? A service like microdermabrasion allows you to maximize your skincare routine’s benefits, and spring is a great time to have the service, since the weather is not extreme and your skin can easily recuperate.
If you can’t get to the spa, or even if you can, and want to maintain your fresh-faced results, incorporate a fruit enzyme packed mask several times week into your skincare routine. “The strong power of enzymes – especially from fruits like papaya, pumpkin and pineapple – is an extension of the spa experience,” says Zicu. An effective daily spring skincare routine should also include a basic cleanser (both for morning and night), a toner to remove any residual product, a serum containing antioxidants and vitamins, and a moisturizer (which, during the day, should contain sun protection). Zicu recommends looking to products with Vitamin C and AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) for gentle, continuous exfoliation and firming. A well-known favorite is Skinceuticals C+AHA. These products will vary as your skin texture adjusts seasonally. A great evening extra that works for most skin types is a hydrating mask in a cooling transparent gel form. When applied in the evening (and rinsed prior to bed), it can help you to wake up with a more luminescent glow.
Want to whip up a simple mask straight from the kitchen that leaves skin glowing, hydrated and firm? Zicu recommends this recipe to be used in the evening: Mix one egg yolk with avocado oil or extra virgin olive oil to make a mayonnaise-like base. In a separate bowl, beat the egg white until foamy and stir in 2-3 drops of fresh lemon juice. Massage the yolk-based mask into neck and face, and then apply the white foamy mixture as a second layer. Relax for 15 minutes and once dry, wash away. Follow up with a toner and moisturizer. The skin will be moisturized and nourished from both the natural egg protein and the antioxidants from the oil.
In addition to topical treatments, take your spring glow to the next level by detoxing the body and rehydrating from the inside out with some help from your diet. Kick off the day with water packed fruits such as grapes, berries and melons. They help to rehydrate the body after a long night’s rest and they are bursting with antioxidants and vitamins. Relying heavily on vegetable based meals can also give your complexion a boost.
Drinking water is essential, but Zicu also recommends two cups of nettle tea daily (found at health food stores), which is known for thousands of years to purify and cleanse, as well as taking a teaspoon of royal jelly (collected from the queen cells of the honeycomb), a super-strong antioxidant and a purely natural anti-aging product that is thought to have many regenerative properties.
A brush of luminizing powder and a cheek stain’s natural-looking flush can finish off your look, but taking great care of your complexion and loading up on spring’s bounty of fresh fruits and veggies are what will have others asking how you’ve started the season looking so fabulous.
