Exhale Spa may be best known for its popular Core Fusion and yoga classes, but you don’t want to miss out on the wide array of massages that the spa also offers. I recently visited Exhale’s Madison Avenue location to experience its signature therapy, the Fusion Massage, a Swedish-based massage that is enhanced by the use of aromatherapy oils.
The area near the reception desk has an appealing selection of fitness clothing and beauty items for sale before you change into a robe and head to the lounge area, where you can have some tea while you wait for your treatment to begin.
Michael, my massage therapist, asked if I had any problem areas needing extra work, and I told him that since I sit in front of a computer most days, my tight neck and shoulders are the first spots where I feel tension. I chose to unwind with the relaxing aromatherapy option, which uses oils containing lavender, bergamot, cherry sage, sandalwood, chamomile and vetiver to promote and restore calm. (Uplifting or detoxifying aromatherapy blends are available if you prefer more of a pick-me-up or cleansing effect.)
I felt as if my 60-minute Fusion Massage was done in no time, which is the sign of a relaxing treatment, and I wasn’t ready to leave Exhale just yet. The women’s changing room, which is quite roomy, well stocked with shower supplies and immaculately clean, has the added plus of its own steam room. Since I was getting over a cold, a few minutes of steaming was the perfect way to seal in the benefits of my massage before I took a hot shower. As the weather gets colder, I am already fantasizing about how nice it would be to enjoy a spa treatment and the steam room before heading out to brave the wintry elements.
