I recently stayed in the beautiful city of San Diego, California, and spent some time at The Dana on Mission Bay.
I learned that the resort was originally developed in 1968 by the City of San Diego to accommodate lodging for nearby SeaWorld. The hotel has undergone a $20 million renovation that was completed in 2004 with the construction of an additional annex to the property. This expansion has created new lodging and event space for every budget.
The hotel’s grounds are manicured with plenty of So Cal plants, flowers and palm trees. It’s a little slice of affordable heaven.
The number one thing about The Dana is the ‘location, location, location’. It’s minutes away from SeaWorld, Old Town, The San Diego Zoo, The Gaslamp Quarter, and about 20 minutes from the airport and sandy beaches.
The complex has two separate buildings, Marina Cove and Water’s Edge. Marina Cove: These Standard, View, and Lanai Rooms have been recently updated. Amenities range from refrigerators and microwaves to flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi.
I recommend Water’s Edge. All deluxe guest rooms and suites feature private patios or balconies overlooking Mission Bay and Mission Bay Park as well as wet bars with microwaves and refrigerators. This option also offers a variety of two-room suites for families or extended stays.
The property sprawls with great spaces for meetings, events and celebrations. The waterfront views are spectacular and our room had a veranda larger than most New York City apartments. The grounds have a garden near the bay that is perfect for a corporate outing, family gathering and weddings.
Things to do: Jog along the bay, jet ski, powerboats, paddle boats, bicycles (single & tandems), water-skiing, wakeboarding, motor boat rides, wave runners, aqua cycles, paddle boards, and kayaks.
Aside from the location, the coolest thing about Dana on Mission Bay is that you can bring your dog. There are restrictions: For a non-refundable cleaning deposit of $100, small dogs are allowed to stay in guest rooms overnight. There is an additional $100 fee for any stays past 6 nights.
Pros: The location. Kid friendly. Bring your dog.
Cons: I had to send my food back twice while dining at the Firefly Restaurant & Bar.
Note: Phil’s B.B.Q, La Jolla and Legoland are just a short drive away.
