Dinner and a Show:  The Sanctuary Hotel & “Shear Madness” Shine Off Broadway

If you’re traveling to New York City, or if you’re a local who needs a staycation, here’s the latest in-the-know insider tip.

Two restaurants at the Sanctuary Hotel in the theatre district are currently offering new prix fixe theater menus and guests of the hotel will receive a special code to get tickets for the Off Broadway smash hit, “Shear Madness” at a discounted rate.

This is what we discovered.

Magenta and blue uplighting illuminate the hotel lobby and a narrow hallway with several Swarovski crystal chandeliers dangling from the vaulted ceiling. At the end of the corridor is an equally phosphorescent room — Tender Restaurant & Lounge. The dining room is chic and welcoming with geometric mirrored walls and ceiling and plush, tufted, blood orange banquettes facing sunshine yellow, leather chairs that make the room pop with color. The ambiance is alluring, contemporary and sexy. It reminds me of a swank International auberge but with a distinct signature that sings New York City. While the interior design and hospitality are very important, for this self-proclaimed Foodie, it’s all about the cuisine.

Aperitif

They offer a wide selection of inspired house cocktails. I chose their Daydream libation: Absolut, Pomegranate and Arugula. It was easy to detect the fruit that hails originally from Iran, but this beverage did not pack a punch or stimulate my taste buds. I barely noticed the arugula except as a garnish. This drink would improve immensely with a different green such as basil or mint and a little heavier pour. The wine list, on the other hand, is vast and impressive.

The Dinner Bell

The prix-fixe pre-theatre menu includes something for every taste including fish, meat, pasta and vegetarian options. For appetizers, we passed on the salad selections and I chose the Polenta Lasagna. This dish was appealing to the eye, flavorful and a perfect starter. Moist polenta slices are layered with a robust gorganzola dulce, roasted cherry tomatoes along with shitake and maitake mushrooms. The portion is generous and the flavors melded perfectly. Mouthwatering. My dinner partner enjoyed the fresh California Roll. On my next visit I’d like to try the Avocado Fries (diced apple, basil essence and ranch dip).

Unfortunately they were out of the Pork Chop on this evening so I opted for the Atlantic Salmon. A perfectly seared filet with a crispy skin appeared at the table. It is served over a bed of asparagus spears in a white cream/butter sauce and topped with fried onion straws. The dish is accompanied with dollops of caviar and fish roe. The salmon was moist and flaky and all ingredients were well balanced with a desirable combination of flavors and textures making this entree very enjoyable and memorable. Thumbs up.

The theater menu includes a tempting variety of desserts from cheesecake to chocolate mouse and more. I suggest the Tiramisu. Sweet. Delectable. Decadent. Note: If you are pressed for time to get to the theatre, they will honor your desserts after the show. Chalk that offer up to gracious and smart hospitality.

Show Time

After dinner, Sanctuary Hotel guests could dash off to see “Shear Madness” currently playing at The New World Stages at 340 West 50th Street. This long-running farce has been playing in Boston for years (Guinness World Records) and now is embraced by New York critics and theatre goers. Staring: Jordan Ahnquist, Jennifer Ellis, Adam Gerber, Jeremy Kushnier, Patrick Noonan and Lynn Wintersteller.

This audience participatory madcap whodunit is set in a unisex hair salon when a murder takes place. Audience members and the cast partake in a free-flowing romp to determine the culprit and solve the crime. The scripted and extemporaneous show guarantees belly laughs and has a growing cult following — every performance is different and chock-full of daily news and pop culture references.

Regardless if you are seeing a show or seeking a new hotspot for dinner, The Sanctuary Hotel’s two restaurants Haven Rooftop and Tender Restaurant both offer these new menus which includes 3 courses for $45 and available Monday-Friday from 5pm-7pm. The discount tickets for hotel guests runs thru May 1rst, 2016.
